The first of its kind in Scotland.
A hand-painted mosque dome combining Qur'anic calligraphy, geometric design, ornamental pattern and gold detailing. The project was designed as a complete visual system, bringing together the verse of the Throne with the Most Beautiful Names in a composition made for architectural scale.
Project Overview
A contemporary mosque dome rooted in tradition.
I was commissioned to design and paint a dome for Masjid Al-Khazra in Glasgow. The brief called for something respectful, intricate and uplifting: an artwork that could hold the sacred atmosphere of the prayer hall while feeling distinct to the mosque and its community.
The final design brings together traditional Arabic calligraphy, Islamic geometry, floral ornament and a restrained palette of deep green, warm gold and cream. Every element was planned to work from a distance, then reward closer looking with detail.

Ayat ul-Kursi forms the heart of the dome. Its placement gives the composition spiritual weight, while the surrounding pattern creates rhythm and balance around the calligraphy.

Outer Ring
The Most Beautiful Names
The outer ring features 20 of the 99 Names of Allah, painted in a continuous calligraphic band. The names were selected and arranged to create a sense of movement around the dome, guiding the eye in a circle above the prayer space.
This circular reading of the text was central to the design: the dome is not a flat artwork placed on a ceiling, but an architectural surface that surrounds the viewer.

The geometric pattern was built to sit inside the centre of the dome, giving the composition structure before any ornament or calligraphy was added. The palette was chosen to echo the mosque interior while retaining enough contrast for the detail to read from below.
