Teaching across the UK

Introducing people to the art of the pen

Azim has travelled around the UK to perform live calligraphy and teach beginner workshops. In April 2016, he visited Al-Noor School in Aberdeen to introduce a group of children to Arabic calligraphy, returning the following year with a more refined course.

Sessions have welcomed younger children and adults alike, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions, receive individual guidance and learn through examples from Azim’s own work.

Inside a workshop

From proportion to confident practice

A standard workshop begins with the principles of calligraphy: the rules of proportion, how to hold the reed pen and how to move it with control. Participants then work through the alphabet before joining letterforms into words and sentences.

  • Principles and proportions of calligraphy
  • Introduction to different script styles
  • Practising words and short compositions
  • Access to qalam reed pens and ink
  • Individual help in all areas of writing
  • Guidance for continuing practice independently
